Fundraiser Due

The school catalog fundraiser is due this Friday, September 17th! Please continue to sell as much as possible and turn in the money promptly. A smartboard is a huge technological advantage to have in a classroom, and your support is much appreciated!

Apple Theme! 9/20-9/24

We will be learning all about apples this week because Johnny Appleseed's birthday is the 22nd! We will be comparing numbers with Al the Alligator, and practicing writing and reading our numbers 0 - 40.  In Science, we are going to learn about the life cycles of apple trees, finding out what happens to apples when you boil them, and continue studying plants.  In Language Arts, we will be learning about Grandma Ellie, practicing rhyming, learning about verbs/adjectives, and reading a new story.

Please ask your child everyday what they learn in school to reinforce their knowledge.

Also, your child needs to bring in one apple that we will be graphing together as a class, and if anyone would like to volunteer to bring in a bag or two of apples to make applesauce it would be so amazing! Thank you!

9/13 - 9/17 Learning Objectives

This week students will be able to identify living and nonliving objects, as well as learn about plants in science. We will make binoculars and go outside to find living/nonliving things. We will also plant a pinto bean and lima bean.  In Language Arts, students will be learning how to spell words with short vowels a, i, and o. We will learn about Fat Cat, Big Pig, and Officer Octopus through oral stories. In math, students will be able to describe patterns and find even/odd numbers. We will use dance partners to find even numbers, and crying, left over singles to find odd.

I encourage all parents to ask their students what they learn about in school everyday. Please don't just accept, "I don't know, or I don't remember." We do lots of fun, engaging activities that the students might just need some helpful reminders.

FIELD TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOHOO!!!!!!!! It's field trip time! We have officially arranged for the children to go to Oil Patch Ranch on October 15th near Houston. Go to www.oilpatch.com to look at more information! We will need to collect $7.00 from each student for his/her entry fee, as well as $7 for chaperones that pay ahead of time. It will be TONS of FUN! The children will be able to pick their own pumpkin for free, go to a petting zoo, milk a cow, go on a hay ride, etc! This will fit right in with our living/nonliving unit that we will learn about during the month of October.  Please call me if you are willing to chaperone. All First Grade classes and Deaf Education classes will be attending, so chaperones will be much needed! Also, students will need to bring their own sack lunch or buy a sack lunch from the cafeteria. More notices will be sent out when the date comes closer. Have a wonderful day!

Open House

Welcome to Open House from 5pm to 7 pm! This is your student's class blog so that you, the parent, can keep up with what your student is learning! Don't forget to sign up for classroom parent, volunteer times, field trip chaperone, or Snack Sergeant.

Everyday your student should be reading at least 20 minutes independently or with you. At this point, your child will probably need a lot of support, so reading along with them will keep their spirits up about reading and not get frustrated with it.

Also, please try to sign your child's blue conduct folder every night because important notes will be sent home along with completed, graded work. Thank you so much! Have a wonderful night!

Monthly Home Project: "All About Me"

Every month, a project will be assigned, for all first grade students, that is to be completed at home. This month, we are doing an "All About Me" project that will help our class family get to know each other better.  The first part of the project will consist of a brown paper bag filled with items that represent the student.  We all, including myself, will show and explain to everyone what each item is, and why it was chosen.  Further due dates and information will be given later this week. Thanks!
